EuroCham Statement on Evolving Border Situation

Phnom Penh, June 17, 2025

Amid the recent decision to suspend imports of certain goods from Thailand – and ongoing public narratives surrounding broader trade and border restrictions – EuroCham expresses serious concern on behalf of its members.

We have engaged with the relevant ministries regarding the evolving situation. While we fully respect the political sensitivities involved, we urge that any further restrictions on commercial goods be approached with the utmost caution, and we strongly discourage such measures. Sudden changes to border trade flows would have wide-ranging implications – not only for our members, but for the broader Cambodian business community and the economy as a whole.

We acknowledge that the Royal Government has signaled its intention to reduce Cambodia’s reliance on imports from neighbouring countries, particularly Thailand at this time. However, any such shift would likely need to be addressed as part of a medium- to long-term strategy – one that includes support for local production and quality standards, rerouting of supply chains, improved domestic infrastructure, and structured incentives to ensure a stable and coordinated transition.

EuroCham continues to view closer economic partnerships with neighboring countries and their business communities – including logistics and supply chains – as a key component of Cambodia’s vision to achieve higher middle-income status. We remain committed to serving as a platform for constructive dialogue with the relevant ministries and to supporting our members through transparent information exchange in the interest of economic stability.

Stay tuned for further updates and member consultations as the situation continues to evolve.
