BUMRUNGRAD HEALTH BRIEFS #12: Key Strategies for Kidney Stone Prevention

Key Strategies for Kidney Stone Prevention

Kidney stones, affecting individuals of all ages, genders, and lifestyles, are a significant health concern. At Bumrungrad International Hospital, our Urology Department is committed to guiding and supporting you through advanced treatments and preventive strategies for managing kidney stones.

These stones are composed of minerals and salts, primarily calcium oxalate, but can also include uric acid, struvite, and cystine. Factors such as diet, body weight, certain medical conditions, and genetics play a role in their development. Recognizing these risk factors is crucial for effective prevention and management.

Symptoms typically arise when a stone moves through the urinary tract. If the stone becomes lodged in the ureter—the tube connecting the kidney and bladder—or the urethra, where urine exits the body, it can obstruct urine flow. This blockage often results in intense back or side pain and pain during urination. It may also cause changes in urine color, cloudiness or foul smell in urine, along with nausea, vomiting, and a frequent need to urinate.

Diet is key in both preventing and developing kidney stones. Reducing the intake of high-oxalate foods like almonds and cashews and limiting animal proteins can help. A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, plant-based proteins, and whole grains, coupled with sufficient hydration is essential in minimizing the risk of kidney stones.

At Bumrungrad International Hospital, we embrace a patient-focused approach. Our experienced team, utilizing the latest technology, offers personalized care tailored to your individual health needs.
