What is the current situation in Myanmar, how has it affected European businesses?

Since the 1st February situation unfolding in Myanmar, both local and foreign businesses have faced numerous and unprecedented challenges. To gain a better understanding of the situation, EuroCham Cambodia in association with our sister chamber EuroCham Myanmar, is hosting a webinar on "European Businesses in Myanmar: Update During a Challenging Period" on 26 January 2022 at 3:00 PM via Zoom.

In this webinar, our expert speakers will provide an update on the current situation in Myanmar, as well as the difficulties that European businesses are facing and how they are dealing with them in this politically sensitive and economically challenging period. In addition, the EuroCham Myanmar team will also present the 5th Round of European Businesses Sentiment Survey conducted in December 2021.

Moderator - Mr. Tom Hesketh, Deputy Director at EuroCham Cambodia

Tom is the Deputy Director at the European Chamber of Commerce. Here, he manages the Services Department in the implementation of advisory projects that assist institutions and companies either invest in, expand or establish their operations in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Prior to EuroCham, Tom was a Consultant at Emerging Markets Consulting (EMC), providing advisory services across multiple ASEAN countries. Before this, Tom worked as a Business Management Graduate Scheme entrant for BT Group Plc., and at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals as a Regulatory Strategist at the firms UK headquarters.

Mr. Adrian Short, Chairman of the Board of Directors, EuroCham Myanmar

Adrian Short joined Cycle & Carriage Myanmar as General Manager in November 2017. In this role he is responsible for Cycle & Carriage’s motor operations in Myanmar, representing Mercedes-Benz Passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Since his arrival, Adrian has been an active member of the EuroCham Automotive working group and now as a chairman of the Eurocham board.

With over 25 years’ experience in global manufacturing industries Adrian has worked for Rolls-Royce, Audi, Volkswagen Group and Massey Ferguson. He has a proven track record in developing markets, auto industry and commercial sales. Adrian is very experienced with business to government lobbying and understands and appreciates complex and changing policy environments. Adrian was Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia from 2014 to 2017. At the same time, he was a board member of EuroCham Indonesia and Vice President of EuroCham from 2015 to 2017.

In 2018 Adrian was awarded the honour of MBE from the Queen for services to Trade and Investment between Britain and Indonesia.

Mr. Thet Zaw Htwe, Head of Policy and Strategy at EuroCham Myanmar

Thet is working as the Head of Policy and Strategy, leading the advocacy efforts of EuroCham Myanmar. Prior to this role, he managed the energy and green growth portfolios of a national NGO. Thet's expertise includes government relations and negotiations, tourism business development, development policy and project implementations. He authored and co-authored a number of publications including a publication on scenario-planning for Australia. He is an alumnus of the Australian National University holding the Master of Environmental Management and Development via an Australian Awards Scholarship.
